What is GATE?

Gifted and Talented Education is often defined in the U.S. as:

“A child or youth who performs at or shows the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience or environment, and who:
Exhibits high performance capability in an intellectual, creative or artistic area;
Possesses an unusual capacity for leadership; or
Excels in a specific academic field.”

How is a GATE student identified at William Orr 2016-2017?

All fourth graders were identified as GATE if they exceeded in both language arts and math on their Smarter Balanced Assessment.
All fifth graders were identified as GATE if they exceeded in language arts or math for two years in a row.

In the future, GATE students may be identified differently.

Once your child is identified as GATE, that title will go on with your child throughout high school.
